101 Coffee House
Atmosphere: A playful marquee in front is the only hint that the square Best Western is home to 101 Coffee House, a vibrant mid-century tradition. A decades-old eatery, by all accounts, had not aged so gracefully until a 2001 renovation brought it back to the ’60s. The results are stunning: spherical pendant lights along the back stone wall, and natural light floods in against the earth-toned blue tiles. The modern playlist and Hollywood clientele keep the vibe cool, but in every other aspect it’s a time warp.

Dining: You’ll pay a pretty penny for a meal at Restaurant 101 (in diner terms), but there are some specialty dishes. Breakfast is served all day, and you’d be wise to order the Mikey Fitz: two eggs, two slices of bacon or sausage, and three silver pancakes or one slice of French toast; we recommend the sausage, generously spiced and not too greasy. The sandwiches have a southern slant (po-boys and blackened catfish abound), but a solid choice is the BLT, which comes with a mix of crispy sweet potatoes and regular fries. Save room for the 50/50 cocktail, made with orange sherbet and vanilla ice cream. As we noted during a recent visit: “It tastes more like buttercream than buttercream.” And that’s a good thing.

Foxy’s restaurant
Atmosphere: Foxy’s wooden A-frame sets it apart, stylistically speaking, from most other retro eateries in Los Angeles. The dark wooden planks of this Glendale restaurant, including the lowered “V” along the center of the ceiling, keep the interior cozy and dim. You’ll find brass fireplace hoods in the shape of arrowheads at either end of the space: one mounted on a stone wall, the other flanked by floor-to-ceiling windows. The eatery, which is frequented by families, also has an outdoor patio where large groups can socialize over their meals.

Food: Foxy’s menu is a giant multi-page menu with photos of almost every dish and the cuisine, which is similar to Mexican. The breakfast plates from the southern border seem to be the most popular items as well as the best of all. Take, for example, Mexico’s Leaning Tower of Pisa: three corn tortillas with Spanish rice, black beans, and two easy eggs, topped with fiery ranchero sauce, avocado, and cheese. There are also shakes here, and while they’re thin and not as creamy as some of the other diner versions, it’s a decent note to end on.

Norms.
Atmosphere: The oldest surviving Norms family restaurant, this Googie icon has been greeting drivers along La Cienega since 1957. Although the interior has lost some of its luster, its defining features are still intact – bucket seats, sloping ceiling, and large zigzag windows. The car dealership-like exterior still impresses with its sharp pennant-shaped sign and cantilevered roofline. Although the restaurant has changed owners and feared demolition, the building’s future is secure thanks to its recent status as a historical and cultural monument.

Dining: When you sit down at one of Norms’ cozy booths, you can get four or five different menus – a multi-page full menu, a breakfast menu, a low-calorie menu, and sometimes a special menu detailing the diner’s baby back ribs selection, just for good measure. On weekdays from 4:00 to 14:00, a Bigger Better Breakfast is available for the commendable price of $6.59: two eggs, two links of sausage, two pieces of bacon, two hotcakes, brown pancakes, and grilled ham. That’s a significant spread, but nothing really stands out. To give it a little extra appeal, upgrade the brown fritters to a full version with bacon, cheddar cheese, green onions, diced tomatoes, and salsa. For those with a sweet tooth, a strawberry waffle might be more appealing, sagging under the weight of stewed berries and a generous dollop of whipped cream.

Panns
Atmosphere: While the themed building may be the most famous space-age building in Los Angeles, this 1958 diner is just as stunning. At Pann’s, everything is faceted: pyramidal lamps, diamond-shaped clocks and an irregular roofline. The same style extends to its extended patio and the small jungle that surrounds the exterior. The care that has been taken to keep this family-run restaurant in immaculate shape is evident in everything from the red and ruby booths and white bar stools to the perfectly preserved neon sign (with the nicest little ornaments in the form of flashing stars). Perhaps that’s why the clientele here is diverse: from regulars who have been dining here for decades to newcomers looking for some serious comfort food.

Food: When it comes to Pann’s menu, one item stands out above the rest: the fried chicken. Take one bite and your chin will be dripping with juice; two bites and you’ll be surprised at how crispy and well-seasoned the skin is. So for breakfast, you can choose to go the more traditional route – the classic breakfast plate consists of two eggs, nicely browned brownies, soft biscuits, and bacon – or you can opt for the fried chicken and waffles that many consider to be among the best in Los Angeles. Whatever you choose, make sure it comes with golden-colored fries flavored with Cajun spices. The list of specialty milkshakes includes a chocolate banana shake – creamy, rich and enough for two people.

Whatever the reason, there’s no doubt that these nine eateries in Southern California make us feel like locals from the moment we walk in the door.

Red Kettle
One of my favorite things about visiting is heading to Red Kettle for a hearty breakfast. At this classic restaurant in the center of Idyllwild, you can’t go wrong with anything on the menu. Order an omelet and a nest and your tummy will be happy all day long. Open daily for breakfast and lunch from 7:00 to 14:00.

Ocean Diner – Hermosa Beach
Not only is this diner too cute to say inside and out, but the food served at this cozy gem is delicious. If you like something sweet for breakfast, make sure to try the strawberry cheesecake waffles. You will be full for days after this decadent feast.

Nickel Diner – Los Angeles
Nickel Diner in Los Angeles is an upscale version of the classic diner in downtown Los Angeles. Some of the specialties I can’t help but dream about include fried chicken, pancakes with a big helping of fresh blueberries on top, and maple glazed donuts with salted bacon. What a delicious palate!

Jenny’s Diner – Highland
A local favorite in the Inland Empire, Jenny’s Diner has a classic diner look with all the comfort foods you’d expect to find on the menu. The corned beef hash and fried chicken steak are just two of the favorite dishes you must try at this down-home restaurant.

Woody’s Diner – Huntington Beach
With six different locations throughout Southern California, chances are there’s a Woody’s Diner near you. This charming diner with a classic 1950s SoCal surfer theme is like a blast from the past. The original location opened in Huntington Beach in 1987, and twenty years later, this local gem is still thriving. Enjoy breakfast all day or check out their dinner menu, which includes some delicious burgers with your favorite toppings.

Harry’s Coffee House – La Jolla
Harry’s Coffee Shop is like a familiar neighborhood friend. Since 1960, this family-owned and operated diner has been serving comfort food in the La Jolla area with large portions and reasonable prices. You will always find a friendly face at this local diner, whether you are a regular customer or just visiting for the first time.

Perry’s Café – San Diego
Located in Old Town San Diego, this bustling restaurant is always packed with people, and for good reason. You will find a creative menu filled with unique breakfast dishes and an incredible selection of frittatas. In Southern California, diners come in many forms, although the design of Los Angeles’ most famous eateries was codified in the mid-20th century with Googie architecture. Splashes of neon signs at an angle pointed the way to dining rooms outfitted with chrome, Naugahyde, and Formica. These old buildings had been disappearing for decades. It’s a reminder to appreciate the space-age shrines that remain, including Foxy’s in Glendale, Bob’s Big Boy Broiler in Downey, Norms in West Hollywood, and Pann’s in Westchester.

If you sit on the east side of the diner, where the booths are emerald in color, you can watch the servers prepare milkshakes. Two scoops of strawberry ice cream, a fresh sliced banana and a ladle of strawberry syrup in one cup. Chocolate ice cream in another. Waffle plates topped with whipped cream and strawberries. During a busy lunch, the dessert show is on all the time. But before dessert, there are bowls of spaghetti covered in chili – the kind you’d find on a really good chili cheese soba, with shredded cheddar and diced onions. And the best corned beef hash I’ve ever had at a diner. Freshly sliced every morning, the meat tastes of coriander, mustard, and pepper. You can order a plate with eggs, pancakes and pancakes (instead of toast).

Brite Spot
This diner has been around since 1949, but the menu is a bold attempt to keep up with modern culinary trends. Happy hour features Buffalo cauliflower florets and fried pickles. At the beginning of 2020, the eatery received a full liquor license, which allowed it to serve alcoholic milkshakes. The vegan part of the menu is extensive, including plant-based versions of most classic diner favorites, including a breakfast sandwich, hamburger, and carrot loaf on a bagel. But it’s still worth going here if you’re nursing a hangover that needs some good old-fashioned lubrication. Southern decadence is a strong opponent of yesterday’s alcohol. It comes strong and stacked, with fried chicken breast, crisscrossed strips of crispy bacon, a wet fried egg and braised greens on a biscuit with honey butter and sausage gravy.

A diner on Clark Street
Grief flooded social media in January 2021 when information about the closure of 101 Coffee Shop spread. Located in a hotel across from the Hollywood Tower in a building that has stood since the 1920s, 101 has been a stable, low-key spot for actors, screenwriters, tourists, and locals for 20 years. New owner Zach Hall, who runs Clark Street Bread, has brought the space back to life and has been extremely careful to manage the community’s collective nostalgia. He has given the menu the most delicate personality transplant; the cooking under Chef Juan Pablo Garcia is probably the best this place has ever seen. Honestly, there’s no place in Los Angeles right now where I’d rather eat a stack of blueberry pancakes three times as tall. The omelets will turn out as pale or browned as you want them.
